Take a look at a selection of my recent projects-
Presented here are excerpt’s of my Fiction Writing Capstone “Whale Fat”, a mixed media short story completed at Oberlin College, spring 2025.
“Whale Fat” is a climate-fiction story about a speculative future where, after a climate apocalypse, the government begins promoting the harvest of human fat for oil. This is paralleled with narration from the last living whale, who after biting into an underwater ethernet cable, gains access to all human knowledge.
If I were to summarize this piece into one word, it would be “consumption”.
This excerpt is the last two pages of the story. There are multiple POV characters in this story, the main two being The Whale, and Milo, a teenager who’s sister is a victim of “Flensing”, a dangerous fat removal procedure that is promoted as a trendy weight-loss treatment option. In this final POV section, Milo and The Whales voices become intertwined, as they talk about the nature of greed.
Here are screenshots of fake emails within in the piece, one of the untraditional forms I include in this story. The POV character, Dr. Schwarz, has all his sections in untraditional mediums: emails, journal entries, and even drawings.
“it’s kaleidoscopic in the best way, and is the sort of fiction I'm most drawn to.”
— Ethan RutherfordI am currently working on official publication, which is why I am not including the entire piece here. If you are interested in seeing the full piece, please contact me at emicraig48@gmail.com.
